Boost your healthy eating plan to help you burn off stubborn abdominal fat by including some of these super helpful foods!
1. Oats
Porridge is a really good choice for breakfast as its low GI means it stays in your stomach longer, stabilising your blood sugar and keeping you full for longer. Oats are full of soluble fibre which helps reduce cholesterol, and is also beneficial in fighting colon cancer by flushing bad digestive acids out of the system. Don’t cover your breakfast in golden syrup though – try cinnamon or adding some fruit to sweeten it.
2. Berries
Whilst you’re thinking of what to have with your porridge, why not try berries such as raspberries or cranberries? Full of fibre and skin boosting antioxidants, berries are tasty and easy to eat. Raspberry antioxidants have been proven in a Japanese study to help prevent an increase in overall body and visceral fat, and raspberries are also believed to help you control cravings and appetite by reducing blood sugar after starchy meals, so it’s a good idea to have a handful as dessert!
3. Good Fats
We do need some fat in our diet. It’s best to chose natural ‘mono-unsaturated fats’ like olive oil and canola oil for cooking, over sunflower and vegetable oil, and definitely never ever cook with lard! Coconut oil does have a high content of saturated fat, however the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that the type of fatty acid found in coconut oil can acutally help reduce body fat and waist circumference. Avocado is another healthy source of mono-unsaturated fat and also a great source of fibre.
4. Green Tea
Green Tea is rich in antioxidants and has actually been proven to speed up your metabolism. You don’t need to buy this tea on line as some ‘green tea weight loss’ websites would have you believe. It’s available in all supermarkets and health food stores. It’s not specialist – even ‘PG’ make it now! Research conducted in Switzerland showed that green tea drinkers burn around 266 more calories a day than those who drink other drinks instead!
5. Green Vegetables
Green veggies have several health benefits. They are full of water, so help you and your skin keep hydrated. They are full of fibre and are very low in calories. If you try eating a green salad before your main meal, you’ll find you are satisfied with smaller portions, and consume fewer calories. Greens like spinach and romaine are best, as iceberg lettuce contains much less fibre. If in doubt, choose the darker green leaves. Try dressing your salad with a vinegar based dressing, as Japanese researchers have found that vinegar can boost your body’s ability to burn fat!
