Quinoa (pronounced ‘keen-wah’) is a grain-like seed which comes from South America and was considered one of the most sacred foods of the Incas, who called it ‘chesiya Mama’ which means ‘The Mother Grain’. Quinoa is now readily available in health food shops and larger supermarkets and boasts a host of health benefits.

In the last blog I used the phrase ‘if you fail to plan you plan to fail’, and when it comes to losing weight, that couldn’t be more true. Saying you will start a healthy eating plan is no good if the only food you have in your kitchen is utter rubbish. Below is a guide to help you remove the foods from your kitchen which caused you to gain weight, and replace them with foods that will assist you in your weight loss journey. Do this and you’ll be prepared to make nutritious meals, and snacks which give you energy rather than sap it away! I know it’s hard to abandon those old foods that give you comfort and make you feel better, but think about it… do they really make you feel better? My Story so far…
As a teenager, like most, I had always fluctuated between being a bit chubby, then relatively thin. I can only presume that you really do ‘grow out’ before you ‘grow up’. I’d never really worried much about my weight, until at 17 (and at a perfectly healthy weight for my height I might add…) my boyfriend mentioned to me that his last girlfriend was a lot thinner than me… just what every girl wants to hear. If someone said that to me now, I’d tell him to take a long walk off a short cliff, however at only 17 and completely in love; I tumbled head first into a dangerous world of crash dieting in a desperate attempt to lose weight. The more weight I lost, the more love and attention I received from him and the happier I appeared on the outside. Under it all however I was constantly battling with myself and panicking about losing more weight and being ‘thin enough’. When I reached about 8 stone I didn’t seem to be able to lose any more weight (probably because I was already ridiculously thin) so I started to try other methods. Staying up exercising all night, taking overdoses of diet pills, restricting my calorie intake to dangerously small amounts per day, you name it – I tired it. All the restriction and control led to ‘falling off the wagon’ which had terrible consequences for me. Even if I ate one thing I hadn’t planned to eat that day I had to make myself sick to get it out of my body. Basically I developed an eating disorder, and with it became very depressed. I ended up leaving University half way through my first year.
