Why go Organic?
Going organic is not only better for the environment, but could prove to be better for your health too. In addition to reducing your carbon footprint, organic produce can also help you achieve weight loss goals, help you to deal with other health problems, and can actually taste better than regular food.

Here’s a quick guide to the benefits of choosing organic foods:
The Environment
We only get one world and we all have to live in it. Organic foods stocked in supermarkets are often locally produced and therefore travel less miles to get to you. If you can buy from local farm shops you are also helping local business to thrive and boosting the local economy. Organic farming uses 30% less fossil fuels, and cares for our land by reducing soil erosion and maintains soil quality as the crops aren’t covered with nasty chemicals and pesticides. Organic farms are shown to have five times more wild flowers and 44% more birds than non-organic farms, and so help us to maintain bio-diversity.
Taste and quality of food
As organic food isn’t full of preservatives and chemicals it is much fresher. I admit that you’ll have to eat it quick as it does go-off quicker, but who really wants to eat that freaky tomato that has managed to survive sitting at the back of the fridge for two weeks! Fresh food is always going to be better for us! Organic food also has to fight off bugs by itself as it can’t rely on pesticides to save it. This means that organic produce has more anti-oxidants. Fresh nutritious food tastes better, and as you are eating the foods that are in season, you are giving your body what it needs to cope with changes in weather and also eating a more diverse diet rather than the same fruit and veg all year round.
Health benefits
Organic food doesn’t contain any endocrine disrupters or hormones and therefore can help you stay slim and prevent diabetes. Some meat imported from other countries can contain steroid hormones which are fed to cattle and can help them to gain up to 3lb per day! Do you really want to put that hormone into your body!? Also antibiotics used in the non-organic meat and dairy industry can leading to antibiotic resistance, which can leave us defenceless against bacteria such as MRSA! Organic produce can have other benefits on specific health conditions, for instance organic milk produce was found to reduce eczema by 36% in young children.
The cost of going organic
Now organic produce can cost more than regular food. You can try to grow your own fruit and veg if you have the space, and making friends with the local farm shop can always be helpful. Look out for offers on organic food in your local supermarket, and make sure you don’t waste any food by planning meals. Organic produce is higher in vitamins and anti-oxidants and helps you fight bacteria! What could be a better investment in your health than that! Paying a little extra for quality organic food can be worth it if it improves your quality of life!
