12 Principles I Want To Share With You

This post was supposed to go out on the 28th November (my Birthday) but I never managed to finish off the post so here it is

Hey guys it’s that time of the year again.

The day I popped out of my mother with a massive head and a tiny body. Sadly the large head was set to stay from day one.

On a good note though things haven’t turned out to be so bad. My head is still on my shoulders, I’m slightly crazy and I’m set out to make real changes in my life for the country and the fitness industry!

My mum cooked up an amazing stew last night and we had meringues, cream and berries for pudding, which were delicious.

I joined the fitness industry when I was 18 and started my first job at the littledown centre, which was fun but I quickly wanted to move onto bigger and better things, so I took up teaching classes for almost 3 years.

You should have seen me teach my first spinning class! I was dreading it. I had ZERO fitness on a bike and my first month nearly killed me. I didn’t have much fat on me at the time when I started.

Think I weighed around 77 kilos and with 4 weeks of spinning, teaching 2-3 times a week, I lost 4 kilos!

I looked VERY ill…

But as my fitness increased the weight packed on, so I didn’t look like a junkie. I took up more classes teaching pilates, RPM, spinning, Core stability, circuits, body pump and boxercise.

Through the core part of group teaching, I was teaching 20 classes per week.

Was it fun???

It was horrible!

For the first 2-3 months yes, it was fun but it really wasn’t a life style I could maintain. I kept on getting injury after injury, which did not go for months until I decided to jack it all in and launch Jango Health & Fitness.

Don’t get me wrong, I have learnt A LOT teaching classes. Even if I do say so myself, I’ve become a pretty shit hot group instructor!

My primary goals were to be able to fund my own lifestyle and living on my own from the age of 18 but I knew being employed as fitness instructor or class teacher wasn’t going to be enough to pay the bills.

At the start of 2011 I set up Jango Health & Fitness boot camps to do 3 things;

  1. To deliver outstanding results
  2. To create a unique experience
  3. To create a community of people that achieve together

So far so good. we have over 100 members who are getting tremendous fitness and weight loss goals.

The last 2 years have been a bit of a learning curve for me and I wanted to share with you, what I have learnt along the way.

Work hard but don’t kill yourself in the process – This is exactly what I did during my years teaching group fitness and I soon learnt it wasn’t sustainable. I still work hard now, I get up at 5:30am most mornings and don’t stop till around 9pm but the work I do now doesn’t leave me crippled, drained and unmotivated. I’ve learnt to acknowledge the achievements I’ve made, no matter how big or small they are.

Don’t hang around with energy vampires that suck the life out of you - Since being with my mentor, Paul Mort, this is what he has been saying I hear A LOT, and you know it’s so true. The more I hang around with ‘like minded’ people in the fitness industry, the happier I am and the more I succeed.

Go with gut feeling – I’m very much a hands on and social kind of guy. I hate paper work, which is why I have an AWESOME PA that does most of my admin for me (paper work makes me feel sick). I don’t make judgements based qualifications or business status. I go on the gut feeling of whether someone is right, to work or do business with. Anyone I’ve done business with in the past, that I didn’t really connect with, never really worked out.

open+mind 12 Principles I Want To Share With You

Be open minded – Luckily this isn’t something I’ve had trouble with but I know a lot of people do. Being stuck in old ways of doing business, not open to ideas and not willing to take some advice that would really benefit them. Personally it’s not healthy and it wont benefit anyone.

Make people smile – This makes people feel good and makes you feel good. I try and make 20 people smile everyday EVEN if I’m in a bad mood myself. Nobody likes a sour face.

Learn to take some time off – This is something I used to be really bad at! VERY BAD! Here’s a simple equation of what it does.

Too much work + not enough play/me time/ time off = Bored, burnt out, unmotivated and UNPRODUCTIVE.

I’ve lost hours of time just doing shit because I never took time off. I now tend to hit work in an interval style, like I do at my boot camps. Short and sweet with little breaks, like this blog post!

Its ok to say NO – Too often I have said yes to things to find out, deep down inside, I really regretted it. Think hard about the decisions you make before it’s too late. The world is a big place and you can’t please everyone. Sometimes it’s healthy to just say no

Never worry about what others are doing – I used to do this all the time, always worrying about competition and it really caused a lot of unnecessary stress, to the point where I didn’t really get a lot done. Use your own ideas, be yourself, be unique! That’s what moves your forward. Not copying what others are doing around you!

Take things one-step at a time – This is easier said than done, right?? My day-to-day work used to be HECTIC. I gave myself way too many things to do, in one given day, so what I used to do was try and get them ALL done at once. This was VERY stupid because I never really fully finished off each task. Now I get the most important things done, with my FULL attention, and leave the rest to work on later. Simples!!

Change is good – I love change, it keeps me on my toes and interested in what I do. Even if it’s bad change, it’s good to because life is huge learning curve.

Learn to switch off – I’ll admit, I’m still not good at this! But I know for a fact when I do switch off, my productivity the next day is massive! I love to watch movies, cook good food, read (sometimes), love a nice siesta from time to time and either go for a swim or train in the gym.

Now take some action and apply some of this to your own life, it doesn’t hurt to try does it?!

Remember to be open minded as change is good, go with your gut feeling on each tip, try them one step at a time, don’t worry what others think of you when you do them, always work hard on each tip and of course, if you don’t want to try it, it’s OK to say no.
